Blueberry Hand Pies Baking Fail: Your Recipe, [Our] Kitchen

A few weeks back, we stopped at a quaint roadside market on the way home from Atlantic City. They had pints and pints of fresh local Jersey blueberries that we couldn't resist buying. Some we ate straight out of the package - they were warm and juicy and tasted like summer candy. The others were destined for hand pies. Have you heard -- pie is the new cupcake?

(Insert appropriate segue here)...We've been meaning to join up with the "Your Recipe, My Kitchen" club hosted at Frugal Antics of a Harried Homemaker, and this recipe for blueberry hand pies from The Pastry Affair was one of the many recipes we had bookmarked to try. They looked and sounded so good, and now we had plenty of blueberries, so, why not?

In the interest of disclosure, we used store-bought pie crust, but otherwise followed the recipe without changes. They looked beautiful - crimped with a fork and topped with demerara sugar before going into the hot oven.

Okay. We may or may not have overstuffed the pies just a bit. Take a look:

They all burst in the oven. Our cookie sheets were glazed with sticky sugary blueberries. Thank goodness we used aluminum foil! One more baking fail. (And now you know why we don't bake that often).

We did end up with a half-dozen decent-looking darlings that we shared with our neighbors. This was the prettiest one.

The rest of the mess we served ourselves in bowls topped with vanilla ice cream. It may not have looked pretty, but it was deee-licious! We loved the freshness the lemon zest added, and the deep warmth from the cinnamon. And, of course, all those bursting blueberries!!!

Thanks for the recipe, The Pastry Affair. We'll give it another try sometime. You've inspired us.

They sound tasty, especially with the ice cream! The same thing happened to me when I attempted raspberry hand pies! It was messy, but tasty!

I am so guilty of overstuffing things like this. But hardly matters what they look like, if they taste great!

I bet the fail tasted good anyway...you really can't go wrong with blueberries and vanilla ice cream.

Oh man! I'd be happy to take some of those burst ones off your hands for you. They look SO good! Buzzed :)

When all is said and done-taste reigns over presentation any day! Hand pies are so versatile and great to take on the go. Glad you enjoyed these-wish I had a few here. Yum!

These look wonderful! Who cares if they burst, just more blueberry filling to love!

I too tend to overstuff these things... haha! But sometimes the best presentation is slightly broken and served with ice cream! ;-)

I had a baking fail this weekend too. At least your baking fail was still delish! They look even more appealing with the juices coming out...

I think they look fabulous. What's a little bursting pie in the grand scheme of things. If it means warm pie like this I'd burst some in my oven too. And probably will. Lol!

I am so guilty of overstuffing a few of my pies, too. No one can blame us for wanting more filling, can they? :)

Love that you put these in ice cream! If only I had thought of that, my burst pies could have gone to a better place... Love the photos! I'm so glad these (kinda) worked out for you.

Even though they burst open they still look so delicious! I love making mini pies and blueberries are one of my favorites! That last photo with the scoop of ice cream is making me so hungry right now...

Ooh they do look tasty though!! I was thinking this morning of making a hand pie and your post gives me that much more amo before I head into the kitchen. This is why my slogan used to be "being a bit dusty can produce delicious results". It still tastes amazing, so it's not a fail, right!? Thanks for the post.

I was just talking to my husband about wanting to make these! I told him I would probably end up over stuffing them... haha, your post had me giggling.

I had a similar issue with over-stuffing hand pies I made for the Fourth of July, but I didn't mind -- more "ugly" ones that got to stay home with me instead of getting packed off for a picnic!

These look delicious -- I love fresh blueberries!
