Nuts for Nuts (Candied Nuts)

The week before Easter, we bought a tin of butter roasted nuts from T. J. Maxx. We just love the random food selection in that store. We put them out on Easter and Amy's mom loved them so much we let her take them home. Then the cravings set in. Amy just had to have some sweet and crunchy nuts, something that made her think of the ones she gets on the streets of New York City.

Thankfully, there's this thing called "The Internet," where we found a copycat recipe for the NYC original Nuts for Nuts. Honestly, it took about 5 minutes to make a batch, and while they were not exactly the same, they were good enough for the time being. Until we can get to NYC again, anyway. (We booked our hotel room yesterday.)

Next time, we might experiment with a little salt, or cayenne, or...who knows what? Let us know if you come up with something delicious!

Nuts for Nuts Copycat Recipe

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons water
1/4 cup granulated sugar

Bring the water and sugar to a boil in a medium saucepan. Once the sugar has dissolved, lower the heat to medium and stir in the nuts. Cook for two minutes, stirring occasionally. At the 2-minute mark, stir vigorously for one minute. The water will evaporate and the sugar will crystallize onto the nuts. When this happens, turn off the heat but continue to stir until the sugar browns slightly. Pour coated nuts onto a plate to cool.

Fisher Nuts Features Our Sweet Potato Risotto with Glazed Walnuts

Last fall, our original "Sweet Potato Risotto with Spicy Maple Glazed Walnuts" recipe was one of the Top 10 finalists in the Fisher Nuts "My Fresh Twist" Recipe Contest. We won a monetary prize, a signed copy of Alex Guarnaschelli's cookbook Old School Comfort Food and, naturally, bragging rights. The final part of our prize just came this week, and that is Fisher Nuts having our recipe professionally cooked, styled, photographed, and featured on their website. How cool is that?!?!?

Here's the link to the feature on their website, and the beautiful photograph you can see there, or above. We think it looks amazing.

Thank you to Fisher Nuts and Chef Guarnaschelli!!!

Food Porn and a Favor

The Food Porn: Have you heard the term "food porn"? People like us, foodies with food blogs, might use that term to describe our food photography. And we're not the only ones. TouchVision is an internet news channel that streams a variety of "NewsMovies" on pop culture items, current affairs, weather, and various and sundry other topics including food. And they wanted one of our photos for their "Food Porn: Burgers of the East" segment. Woo hoo! One caveat: all of these burger photos will make you drool, so don't watch if you're hungry. Ours is the fourth one - the Fried Cheeseburger from Shady Glen in Manchester, CT, which is right down the road from us (fortunately or unfortunately, we're not entirely sure).

The Favor: If we can ask again so soon after last week, two of our recipes are in the running in the "My Fresh Twist" recipe contest over at Fisher Nuts. If you are willing, and have a moment, check out our recipes and vote for one, or both, of them. You get 5 votes per day from October 23 until November 5. The links are below. Many thanks!
